Music has always given meaning to Chika’s life. From her early days as a music journalist in her native Japan, to singing with the Greater Auckland Chorus in her adopted home of Auckland, New Zealand, Chika’s life has been enriched by song and the company of her fellow singers. In 2016, a sudden loss of hearing in one ear threatened to remove the pleasure of music from Chika’s life. In time she was able to adjust and continue singing. In 2022, when the hearing in her other ear started to disappear, Chika had to face a devastating future without a soundtrack.A Pause in the Music is Chika’s journey of hearing loss and partial recovery, and her triumphant return to a capella chorus singing. Detailing her medical and alternative health treatments, support from ENT specialists, audiologists, and her family and friends, and the emotional rollercoaster of an uncertain outcome, Chika bravely and honestly tells the story of her determination to reclaim the joy of music.
